How much is your tuition?

Ok so this is kind of a touchy subject for me because I am not instate so I am paying a higher tuition when I only live 50 miles away.

I really hate the fact that there is a metro rate but it is still like $4,000 more the someone who is instate. I feel that if you

West Liberty Media Arts Center

live within a certain mileage from the University you should get more of a tuition assistance. All Im staying is that there are instate students that live 3-4 hours away and pay less then someone who lives 30 minutes away. How is that fair?

The state of the economy is getting worse and worse but tuition rates continue to go up and up.

I don’t know I just think that WLU needs to reassess the price of everything because we do not live close enough to anything to get a job within walking distance and there are not enough on campus jobs for students to be able to afford everything.

Thanks for letting me rant!

Oh good old Walmart

Walmart at the highlandsAs most of you know I transfer to west liberty almost two years ago now. I went to the University of Pittsburgh for two years then came here. Let me tell you it was a bit of a culture shock, but either way I was used to having a rue 21 right next to class, permanti brothers on the corner and a few chinnese and japanes places plus a tanning solon and like 5 hospitals all in walking distance.

Now I come to WLU and want to order chinese and that is just not an option. Your choses for take out are dominos and dominos. So now if I want something to do or even get anything essential I have to go off the hill to Walmart. Walmart provides me with all my essentials, from a photo lab to toiletries to food. It is about the same distance off the hill as Sheetz but I get so many more choices of everything!!!!

I dont really know what this has to do with but I love making Walmart runs more then I do a Sheetz run. I dont know just me!

What do you prefer?

Do you need a place to live next school year?

Well as some of you know I am in search of an apartment. I have done all the web searching that you could imagine to find a big fat nothing!! Then the things I have found the prices are all jacked up because of the oil rigs in the area. How can a working college student find a fairly priced apartment in this area with all these stupid construction and oil people.

I propose that the University provide better living for the students. I do not want to live in a room where I need to share a bathroom and I do not want to pay extra to have my own room.

Solution look at any other school and you will find that you can have a bigger room for two people and a full bath to themselves, or even better yet make suites where there is one to two people per room but they share 2 full baths and hallway space. This way people are still sharing but you are providing bigger rooms and an easier way for people to try and live together.

As a university you can also make more apartments like the University place available. Everyone would love to live in a apartment style dorm so why can we not offer that to more students. It is unfair that you so many student have to apply for the same dorm and you base the decision off of grades. What about the senior that just wants to get out of the jail cell we call a dorm room?

Well this issue is almost unsolveable but if you have any suggestions on where I could live or how the university could help my sistuation PLEASE let me know!

Do you go to Sheetz late at night?

We all know that we live in the middle of know where. So with nothing to do some students like to make a “Sheetz run” late at night. They have everything a college student could want or need.

They have seasonal items, valentines day chocolate, energy drinks, hot food made to order, and even gas for the car. Now my question to you is should West Liberty University or the town of West Liberty put in a Sheetz gas station right on “the hill.” Students would then be able to get affordable items like energy drinks and milk without having to drive 20 minutes there and 20 minutes back.

Sheets near WLU

I feel that a Sheetz would be a great investment for the University and the town because we are a University now and we need to start acting like it. Lets bring more businesses and shops to our town and give students a reason to want to come and spend four years here!

Let me know what you think!

What do you think about the Ogelbay Apts?

So I am looking for an apartment for next year, and I thought well maybe I could live in the Ogelbay apartments. So I go to the apartments to find out some more information. First I went to the wrong office, I finally find the right office and I walk in all nice and confused. I ask about some more information. The lady hands me an application

WLU Off Campus livingand  tries to push me out of the office, I stay and try to ask a few basic questions like how long is your waiting list, how many bedrooms, price, if I could see one, etc and she was all like fill out the application and you will be put on a list. She wanted no parts of me, I tried calling multiple times before I even got there and there are two lady’s just sitting around the office doing nothing visibly and they couldnt even spend 2 minutes with me.

Is this just a West Virginia thing or are all apartment people like this?

Please help. I need a place and I need your input…are people around here just mean?

Are you getting ripped off by the university?

So we all know that there is pretty much nothing that people can do in the “hill.” Let alone be able to get food late at night. We only have one on campus store open til 10pm on most nights, nad you can only pay with your Sodexo dollars or your own money. Either of those options are fine but Jazzman’s is so over priced.

Then we have The Liberty Tavern, which is normally open til 11 or 12am but is double the price for a smaller item. So both places on campus are very over priced for the college student.

So the next best thing is dominos. They have $5 carry out Wednesdays which allows you to be able to pick up a medium pizza for only $5 dollars, but the other days of the week everything is normally priced. So you might as well have it delivered, but what the average college student might not know is that when your delivery person shows up they are expecting a tip. But the here’s the catch; you have already paid for a delivery charge.

I think that it is wrong that they are not required to put anywhere that you are being charged a delivery charge. It should at least be somewhere on the receipt so that the average costumer can give an educated tip.

Let me know what your opinion is on this matter.

Do you eat at the cafe?

WLU Steak nightOk so this issue has been brought to my attention, The Cafe. The Cafe as most of you know is located in Rodgers Hall, the female freshman dorm. Now I can not say that I eat there anymore because the food is so hit or miss, and if you do not have a meal plan it is actually more expensive then the Union, but the actual reason for this post is steak night. Last night at the Cafe was steak night. From some of my sources I am told all the food was actually hot and it was the best meal ever. So my question to you is why does the student body need to pay five extra dollars for a good meal?

This is a very puzzeling question because we as students already pay so much as it is to attend this university, that is located in the middle of know where, and we can not even get a decent meal on a daily basis.

If you have any comments on his issue please leave a comment becasue I would love to hear about it becasue this is an issue that really bothers me because I feel like we are being robbed, and I hate to see my friends being taken advantage of. Especially by the university.

I knew you were a freshman!

Ok so every year college and university’s go through the same thing….freshman move in. Well the funny thing is that you can always tell who is a freshman every fall semester of a school year. Now when I was a freshman I though I was so cool, I knew what was going on, I tried to just fit in with everyone in classes, I thought I was doing everything right, but the I got older and I keep seeing more and more freshman make the  same mistakes that I did.

My favorite moments is when you are walking through say…the union and there is a group of about 3-4 girls. these girls are standing around giggling, looking at boys, daring each other to go talk to the star basketball player. You look at them and know they are freshman. Now its a little different for guys you can still tell but its not as easy. so we are walking through the union again and you see a table of 2-3 guys. They are just sitting there but they all look like they have baby faces and they are super dressed up for a monday around 10am. You know that they are freshman.

Tell me your freshman stories, and for the freshman right now, don’t worry you are growing out of it as we speak. It is always harder to tell who are freshman second semester but not impossible.

Thanks for ranting with me :)

Where are you going to park at WL?

WL parking lots

This sign should be posted everywhere at WL thru the week because there is never anywhere to park!

So the parking situation at WLU is a massive issue!! There are way to many freshman with cars, and even more people that commute. Then to top it off we have the construction going on over at Shaw hall, so the construction workers have there own parking lot  which takes more spots away from the students. Which causes us to have to park in the grass, visitors spots or even teachers spots, to just make it to class on time. Then to top it all off, if campus police find you in a non issued parking spot you get a $10 ticket. They do not even care about the fact that you come to campus 30 mins before class and you still can not find even one spot. So what do we as students do?

Well the university has promised a new parking lot which is still know where to be found. They promised a new lot to be located behind the baseball field over near Hughes Hall. They tore down houses but never started the construction.

I say there is really not much we can do :/ If we do not pay our parking tickets then we cannot receive our grades or register for class, and if we do not by a parking pass so that they cannot find out what student has the parking violation then we run the risk of being towed if the fines are not paid. West Liberty just really needs to reconsider what students can have cars and which cannot.

Let me know what you think…if you have any solution that I am not thinking about! Happy blogging!

Do you think smoking should be ban?

So this issue of smoking has been brought to my attention. Student and faculty alike are all concerned about the smoking policy that could be implemented by next fall. This policy is that there would be no

WLU Smoking policysmoking on WL campus ever, the university also states that they would be offering programs to help anyone on cam

pus to stop smoking.

Some say that this is happening because people cannot follow the rules, such as,

smoking in the breeze way of main, smoking on the porch of the union, not properly disposing of the remaining parts of your cigarettes, etc. But according to WL News paper, The Trumpet, these are not any of the reasons that the policy is being looked at. The paper is saying that WL is looking into the policy becasue of how bad second hand smoke is. I agree that second hand smoke is bad but I do not think that this is why the policy is being looked in to.

Tell me what you think and if you have heard anything else regarding this topic. Thanks for ranting with me!
